Cranshaw Completes 7INK, Boston’s First Co-living Building

7INK, the seventh and final building at Ink Block, opened in April 2022. This 148,580 SF residential high-rise includes a mix of traditional apartments, studios and shared suites with individual bedrooms but common kitchen and baths. Set on a tight urban site in Boston, this time lapse of construction, shows the 14 stories plus its fifteenth floor penthouse and outdoor deck rise.

The construction site’s immediate adjacency to Whole Food Market required keeping their loading docks open and operational throughout construction. The building’s foundation consists of precast piles with pile caps and grade beams and the building’s steel skeleton was erected with a tower crane. The exterior façade consists of metal panels, curtain wall and punched windows all of which was erected from hydro-mobiles, a mast climbing work platform.

In a new approach to housing in Boston, the 352 rental units come furnished and the building has a large amenity area for co-working and socializing. For more about the project and its impact on Boston, including a new home for the 1960’s era Boston Garden scoreboard, watch WBZ CBS Boston and NBC Boston coverage.

The project was developed by National Development and designed by Elkus Manfredi with Copley Wolff Design Group, AHA Consulting Engineers and McNamara/Salvia, Inc.
