Iron Works Phase 1 transformed a South Boston manufacturing complex, including the former home of Cole Hersee, into a dynamic mixed-use facility with an outdoor amenity area.
Cranshaw was the general contractor in the complex’s repositioning by improving the façades, windows, slabs and systems to prepare the space for a diverse range of retail tenants, including a brewing company, bakery, restaurant, fitness center and entertainment establishments which now occupy the space. The scope of work involved the installation of new storefront windows and specialty glass overhead doors which contributed to the enhancement of the buildings’ overall aesthetic. An inviting exterior courtyard with an attractive decorative steel canopy and various seating options was created to provide a pleasant outdoor gathering space.
Throughout the project, Cranshaw collaborated closely with the Boston Transportation Department to implement effective traffic control measures and improve some surrounding sidewalks, ensuring a seamless integration with the neighborhood.
This first phase successfully revitalized this former manufacturing complex and now offers a vibrant and engaging retail and mixed-use environment.
Iron Works is the recipient of a 2024 Preservation Achievement Award from the Boston Preservation Alliance and a 2024 Metamorphosis Award from Retrofit Magazine. Find out more about the genesis of the project from the Boston Preservation Alliance.
