Pattern District – Upper Falls Splash Park

Newton, MA

Designed as a family-friendly gathering space, the Upper Falls Splash Park features water play elements including streams, sprays, and mist, along with a log climber, seating areas, decorative plantings, and a shaded trellis. The park thoughtfully blends old and new: original railroad ties from the historic Saco Pettee Mill are incorporated under the trellis, while boulders unearthed during construction add natural charm to the splash zone. Native landscaping will continue to grow and evolve with the seasons. The park is directly connected to the Upper Falls Greenway.

Developed by Northland in collaboration with the Newton Department of Parks, Recreation & Culture, the Splash Park is the first completed piece of a larger semi-urban, mixed-use development. Once fully built, the development will include 822 apartment homes, including 145 affordable units, and will prioritize community green space.
